Still More Tricks for Getting Your Company’s .com Domain Name

A word modifier is a great way to get the perfect and, even more importantly, available .com domain name for your business. Adding a word to your business name to get an available .com domain name is a much better option than settling for one of the lesser used .biz and .us top-level domains (TLDs). The most common and well known TLD is .com. We analyzed the top million most popular web URLs across the world in May 2022 and found that nearly 60% had .com for a domain name extension. The second most popular TLD was .net with 15% of the million most popular domain names. Those were the only two top-level domains with more than 10% share as the third highest, .org, was only used by 3% of the most popular web sites. Most of the other top domains are the non-US foreign extensions like .uk, .ru, and even .be (which is used by organizations in the country of Belgium and others like youtu.be). Only a few of the global top one million most popular web sites in May 2022 had a TLD like .biz or .info.

Two major brands in the U.S. with similar names are Frontier Communications and Frontier Airlines. Surely, they both would like to have frontier.com as their domain name but it can only belong to one company and that is Frontier Communications. The telecommunications company purchased the domain name in 1992. Frontier Airlines purchased the domain name they use for their web site, flyfrontier.com, in 1996. “Fly” is a great example of a word modifier. It speaks to what they do as a business, but it is also shorter than “airlines” which they own as well with the domain name frontierairlines.com. The “fly” modifier in the domain name is advertising for their business. It is a call to action which is often an important aspect of effective advertising. Every time the customer sees it or types the URL into their browser, they are being told to take a flight on the airline.

These are some word-modifier examples that you can use to create the perfect .com domain name for your business –

  • fly – just like Frontier Airlines, use flyacme.com for your business if it is air travel related
  • fly to or 2 – flytomiami.com or fly2miami.com. Since “to” and “2” can be confusing and not usually recommended by us, it is best to buy both domains to cover the two ways customers might use the name.
  • nation – this can be your company or product name such as acmenation.com or widgetnation.com.
  • national – acmenational.com
  • international – acmeinternational.com or widgetinternational.com or even widgetsinternational.com by adding “s” to the product name
  • wear – if you have a clothing company then use wearacme.com or even wearwidgets.com
  • made easy – if you sell or a provide a challenging product or service then widgetsmadeeasy.com might be a great for a domain name
  • only at – if your business provides a unique service or sells a hard-to-find product then onlyatacme.com might a great choice
  • cheap – cheapwidgets.com
