Tips for Picking the Best Domain Name for Your Business (Part 2)

Every business needs an Internet domain name. It does not matter if the company has one employee or 100,000. Nor does not matter if the company sells products online or only in the real world. To be successful every business needs to establish its digital presence and brand; an important part of that is registering a unique online domain name.

Since domain names allow people to find your organization online, it is important to choose the right one. Domain names are unique — there aren't two google.com domain names — and there is a limited quantity of good, short, easily recognizable ones.

Our second part of this series for picking the best domain name for your business, is not so much more tips but rather 5 different categories to consider for potential domain and company names when launching your new business. If you have not read Part 1 yet, it can be found here.

5 Considerations to Help You Pick the Best Domain Name

Company and domain names typically fall into one of these common categories.

  1. There are company and domain names that do not clearly describe what a business does or sell. For example, nike.com or addidas.com are names that do not specifically mention sneakers or athletic attire. Names and brands like these are difficult to develop but the successful ones become iconic. Plus domain names like this are often not available as a .com as most ones this short have been purchased regardless of their potential quality.
  2. The names Cricket Wireless and Oviedo Networks are both company and domain names, cricketwireless.com and oviedonetworks.com, that include the product or service that is intrinsic to the business. Having that core product or service mentioned in the domain helps with search engine optimization (SEO) as well as instant customer awareness. Company names like this are more likely to be available as a .com.
  3. Other names can be catchy or fun, and do not define what the company offers as a product or service. Yahoo (yahoo.com – a web portal) and Wolfie Dog (wolfiedog.com – domain name services) are two examples of this category. A name like this can often be an easier way to develop an iconic brand due to their availability as a .com.
  4. Sometimes it is better when the company name and domain name are different. First United Bank & Trust is mybank.com and First Security Bank is ourbank.com. It is very easy for their customers to remember and type these short domain names. Their actual company names could be thought of as too long and complicated, especially with “&” for the first bank, for their Internet domains. Unfortunately, domain names like this are rarely available.
  5. Some companies with long names use an abbreviated domain name – gsk.com for GlaxoSmithKline and American Airlines uses aa.com. Although it is impossible for a new business to get a really short .com TLD domain name. They are all taken.
